Excitement as HOAYS Goes to Cinemas This Weekend.

HOAYS 1Movie lovers can’t contain their excitement as the highly anticipated movie ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ goes to the cinemas this weekend. This much is evident in several posts on social media platforms.

 

The movie which has been released in cinemas in the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand and has performed tremendously well, generating N280 million is expected to do more in the Nigerian market, as the producer, director and writer are all Nigerians.

 

Half of a Yellow Sun which was slated for cinema release earlier this year, could not be shown as the Nigerian Film and Video Censors Board did not rate the movie due to concerns that the movie could incite the public to religious violence in a move which was considered political. However the board finally rated the movie 18 and has thus approved its new cinema release date. 

 

Speaking on the new release date, an official of Bigsam Media said “Half of a Yellow Sun going to the cinemas this weekend is a big deal for us. The movie has done well abroad, but we are expecting a massive turn out in the Nigerian market. This movie is ‘project Nigeria’ because the writer, producer and director are all Nigerians and it is the biggest project from Nollywood. We want movie lovers to come out en masse to see it.”

 

According to Genevieve Nnaij “Half of a Yellow Sun is one of the biggest films I have done so far. It is also one of the best Nigerian films of all times.”

 

Speaking on their expectations for the movie at the cinemas, Kene Mkparu of FilmOne Distribution said “it is the beginning of a new level of film production in Nigeria. The movie is achieving and would achieve greater success. ‘Half of a Yellow Sun‘ tells that Nigerian films can match any international movie and we are expecting that it would make One Million Dollars ($1,000,000) in Nigerian cinemas. It is an honor to have this kind of project to work with, it is a great business and we are grateful to be a part of it.”

 

According to a fan of the movie “I can’t wait for ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ to be in cinemas this weekend. After months of waiting, it’s finally here.”

 

The movie features BAFTA award winner and Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor, BAFTA award winner Thandie Newton, Genevieve Nnaji, O.C. Ukeje, Zack orji and Onyeka Onwenu.
