Challenges i faced making invasion 1897-Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen

Foremost filmmaker Lancelot Imaseun Odua has revealed to Bononline the challenges he faced while filming his new movie Invasion 1897,According to him it took him 4years to make,the scripting alone took about a year ,he started shooting on the 9th of April 2012. Though there was a break with reasons best known to him. During the course of shooting, The Commissioner of Arts, Culture and Tourism Hon. Aanena Jemitola, paid him a visit to encourage him since they had not been financial help from the government.IMG_20140814_132127

Lancelot said his mother gave his life for the movie, the day she died, he shot the highest number of scenes which was about eight scenes,Seven actors who featured in the movie including Justus Esiri,died within the 4yrs of the production of the movie.IMG_20140814_130745

Lancelot made it clear that the production of the film was mainly by Nigerians, with few helps from Americans and Indians. During the period of shooting the film, there was the issue of Kidnapping in Nigeria and the British didn’t allow some of the whites down to Benin.

In addition, some whites who volunteered in the production were not enlightened in acting, so they had to take time to make them fit for the work, and they loved the work.

Invasion 1897 focuses on the invasion of the Benin Kingdom by the British Empire in 1897, and how they carried away ancient artifacts belonging to the people of Benin. Lancelot did a courageous work in Invasion 1897, it’s more like history not a movie. Brilliant work from Lancelot and this work will remain from generations to generations. It’s an African movie, we have had movies like ‘Sarafina’ a 1992 South African film that centres on the Soweto Riot, ‘Hotel Rwanda’ a 2004 American historical drama of the struggle against the Hutu militia in Rwanda.
