Nollywood practitioners and stakeholders have united against diabetes by unveiling a movie academy in collaboration with Saving Life for Africa Diabetes to create awareness for people with health challenges in the industry.

The star-studded seminar which was attended by captains of industry was organized and headed by self-styled ‘King of Muzanga’, Obi Madubogu. The iconic filmmaker, having overcome diabetes in 1998, took it upon himself to fight the scourge through a self-oriented foundation, Saving Life For Africa (SLAD).     diabitis

The aim of the foundation is to educate and inform all stakeholders, senior and junior colleagues of a menace that has over the years claimed the lives of their top colleagues, such as Sam Loco Efe, Justus Esiri, Enebeli Elebuwa, Muna Obiekwe, etc. “SLAD is my initiative.

In 1998, I was down with diabetes, and I discovered that my sugar level was high. Back then, most people didn’t know much about diabetes, and some believed the only illness that can ‘dry somebody up’ is HIV; but that is not true. Diabetes does that too. After what I went through, I discovered that what kills people that have health challenges is lack of knowledge.

That was what inspired SLAD (Saving Life for Africa Diabetes Foundation). “I want to specially thank all my colleagues that came out en mass today to support this movement. I must commend our ambassadors too for their kind gesture. We just have to know that it is better for us to save lives than wait to go for candlelight vigil,” he said.

Present at the unveiling at the National Theatre, Lagos earlier in the week were the ambassadors – award winning actress, Genevieve Nnaji; sultry actress, Oge Okoye; and the likes of Chinedu Ikedieze, Osita Iheme, Benedict Johnson, Mr. Raw, Sammy Okposo, Ebube Nwagbo, Tony Umez, Afiz Ayetoro (Saka), Chigozie Atuanya, Benita Nzeribe, Yaw of Wazobia FM, Emeka Ike, Francis Duru, Mary Uranta, Chioma Chukwuka, among others.
