I hour with Oga bello,Why Actors of yesteryears have many wives Oga Bello

Recently, I was visited the movie set of popular actress cum producer, Aisha Lawal, in Ibadan; where veteran actor, Adebayo Salami, popularly known as Oga Bello, was part of the cast of the movie still brewing. 

My relationship with Oga Bello dates back, and is similar to that of father to a son; because it’s been a while we saw, we spent ample time together. As usual, our conversation was very incisive and jam-packed with much astuteness; I learnt three important lessons from the ‘IKU LENDE’ actor, which I shall be sharing with you. 

Firstly, while in his company, I noticed he was posting on popular social networking site, Instagram. I was surprised and I registered my sensation. I told him if I had not seen him post myself, I would have assumed he probably had a social media handler, like some others, for lack of being able to use those platforms. His response was the first lesson. 

He replied, paraphrased; “Seun, I had to learn to use this social media platforms to stay relevant. When I started acting over three decades ago with my other contemporaries, I was certainly not the best actor back then.

“But what has kept someone like Jide (Kosoko) and I relevant till date is that we have evolved with time. We keep up with trends. That is our secret.”

Wisdom nugget one for the up and coming, to stay relevant, keep up with the trend. 

Not long after that, my wife called me on phone, and we had a slight row, while I was trying to clear the air about who was right or wrong on the issue.

When I rounded off the phone conversation, Oga Bello injected another very incisive nugget; “Seun, in marriage no matter how right you are, you can never be too patient with a woman. Living with a wife requires an overdose of patience.”

Nugget two, temperance and patience are the hallmark of a successful marriage. 

Oga Bello also shed light on why most veterans and theatre practitioners in the Yoruba movie industry are polygamists. 

He explained that most of them practiced guerilla theatre, traveling from place to place. They were fond of losing dedicated female members to marriage, jealous and possessive husbands, who wouldn’t want their wives to continue with their theatre groups.

“We spend so much time training our (female) members, different dance steps and all, yet when major performances are close we stopped seeing them at rehearsals. Their excuses are usually their fiancée or husbands warning them against continuing with us. 

The losses are usually colossal, leaving us last minute to start training someone else. The best way for us to curb such occurrences was to start marrying our women to keep them with us and to keep our business intact.”
